Bluetooth-based vehicle access for connected automotive systems
In connected vehicle technology and automotive electronics, digital key systems are becoming an important component of next-generation vehicle access solutions. NXP Semiconductors has introduced a Bluetooth Ranging Vehicle Access system built around the KW47 automotive microcontroller, designed to enable secure and precise keyless entry for modern vehicles.

The solution uses Bluetooth Channel Sounding (BCS), a feature introduced in Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) 6.0, to determine the precise distance between a vehicle and a user’s smartphone or key device. This capability supports advanced digital key functions, including “phone as a key” vehicle access.

Distance measurement using Bluetooth Channel Sounding
Bluetooth Channel Sounding measures distance by analyzing the physical properties of wireless signals rather than relying on the traditional Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) approach commonly used in earlier Bluetooth positioning systems.

In vehicle access applications, this method enables significantly more accurate proximity detection. The system can determine whether a user is approaching the vehicle, standing nearby, or moving away, improving the reliability of automated unlocking and authentication processes.

Accurate distance measurement also reduces potential vulnerabilities in wireless key systems, helping prevent relay attacks or unauthorized access attempts.

Automotive microcontroller platform for secure connectivity
The vehicle access solution demonstrated by NXP is powered by the KW47 automotive MCU, which supports Bluetooth connectivity and secure wireless communication within automotive environments.

The platform is designed for integration into smart vehicle architectures, where multiple wireless sensors and digital services interact with vehicle electronics. The Bluetooth Ranging Vehicle Access system is designed to support digital key ecosystems developed by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). These standards define frameworks for secure authentication and interoperability between smartphones and vehicle access systems.

Using these frameworks, automotive manufacturers can implement digital key solutions that allow drivers to unlock, lock, and start vehicles using smartphones or other authorized devices.
