Dual-Band GNSS Modules Target IoT Positioning Accuracy

Telit Cinterion has expanded its GNSS module portfolio with two new dual-band positioning modules, the SE873K5-D and SE869eK5-DRK. Both devices are based on the AG3335 chipset series from Airoha and support dual-frequency L1 and L5 GNSS signals to improve accuracy and positioning reliability in connected IoT systems.

The modules are designed for applications ranging from battery-powered IoT devices to high-precision positioning systems requiring continuous location tracking.

Dual-Band GNSS for Compact IoT Devices
The SE873K5-D module targets size- and power-constrained IoT devices such as wearables, asset trackers and fleet management systems. It maintains the compact 7 × 7 mm footprint of the existing SE873K5 family while adding dual-band L1 + L5 positioning capabilities.

The module supports multi-constellation GNSS operation, enabling signals from multiple satellite systems to be processed simultaneously. Dual-frequency reception improves accuracy and helps mitigate signal errors caused by multipath reflections or atmospheric disturbances.

With Differential GNSS (DGNSS) correction support via RTCM data, the module can achieve sub-meter positioning accuracy. Designers can also choose between two power supply variants optimized either for minimal device size or for low power consumption in battery-operated systems.

Configurable usage profiles such as tracking mode or drone mode allow developers to tailor performance for specific IoT applications.

High-Precision Positioning with RTK and Dead Reckoning
The SE869eK5-DRK module is designed for applications requiring higher positioning precision and reliability. The module supports Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning combined with untethered dead reckoning (UDR), enabling centimeter-level accuracy under optimal conditions.

An integrated inertial measurement unit (IMU) enables the module to maintain accurate position estimates when GNSS signals are temporarily unavailable, such as in tunnels or dense urban environments.

When RTK corrections are not available, the module can operate with DGNSS corrections to deliver sub-meter accuracy. This flexibility allows devices to maintain reliable positioning performance across varying operating conditions.

Hardware Compatibility and Scalable Design
The SE869eK5-DRK is built in an industry-standard 16 × 12.2 mm form factor. While it introduces an extended proprietary pinout, it remains backward compatible with earlier designs to simplify product upgrades.

The additional pins enable future expansion and customization, allowing device manufacturers to extend functionality without redesigning hardware platforms.

Positioning Infrastructure and IoT Connectivity
When integrated with Telit Cinterion cellular connectivity modules, the GNSS devices can receive RTCM correction data over mobile networks. This capability enables higher positioning accuracy for connected IoT deployments across global coverage areas.

By combining dual-band GNSS reception, correction services and inertial sensing, the new modules support a range of location-aware IoT applications requiring robust and scalable positioning performance.
