Multi-protocol board integrates industrial communication and motion control

Yaskawa has introduced the new TRITON (YRCP / MP4P), a PCIe-based multi-protocol fieldbus platform designed by the Drives Motion Controls Division. Built around the proprietary ProfiChip Triton CPU, the solution integrates Gigabit Ethernet communication control, PLC functionality, backplane master capabilities, and motion control within a unified automation platform.

All-in-one architecture for real-time applications
The TRITON platform is not a conventional fieldbus adapter but a complete industrial hardware system designed to handle real-time communication, motion control, and PLC logic on a single high-performance platform. The dedicated TRITON industrial processor enables consolidation of functions that traditionally required separate hardware components, reducing system complexity.

The board can be deployed as a real-time controller for robots or industrial machines, a high-performance fieldbus node, a PLC and motion control platform for industrial Ethernet environments, or as a gateway/interface toward external systems. Its architecture is designed to support future expansions, including IoT integration and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).

Protocol support and system integration
From a communication perspective, TRITON supports PROFINET in IO-Device and IO-Controller modes, including PROFIsafe communication, as well as EtherCAT in slave mode. The platform is compatible with the YRC1000 controller starting from version YAS5.70 (with PROFINET support from YAS5.50) and with the YRC1000micro starting from version YBS4.21.

The board architecture includes physically separated networks for master and slave functions, enhancing deterministic communication and supporting evolving industrial safety requirements and future European regulatory standards.

Proprietary hardware and European development
TRITON is a fully proprietary Yaskawa product, with both hardware and software developed and manufactured in Germany and direct integration with the Drives Motion Controls engineering teams. This approach ensures tighter control over technological development and long-term compatibility with existing automation ecosystems.

Consolidation of automation platforms
With TRITON, Yaskawa introduces a solution capable of replacing multiple previous boards, simplifying technical support, logistics, and supply chain management. The integration of industrial communication, motion control, and PLC functionality into a single architecture reflects a broader shift toward more compact, flexible, and scalable automation platforms for digital manufacturing environments.
