USB4 Version 2.0 Test Solution Certified by USB-IF

Anritsu has received official USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) hardware certification for its test solution supporting the USB4® Version 2.0 standard. The certified platform enables development and conformance testing of next-generation high-speed interfaces operating at data rates of up to 80 Gbit/s.

USB4 Version 2.0 and high-speed interface demands
USB4 Version 2.0 is currently the most advanced USB specification, doubling the maximum throughput of USB4 v1 from 40 Gbit/s to 80 Gbit/s. This bandwidth increase supports data-intensive applications such as ultra-high-resolution video transmission, external graphics processing units, high-performance storage devices, and VR/AR systems.

Beyond higher data rates, the specification introduces mechanisms to improve communication robustness, which becomes increasingly critical at these speeds.

Key technical enhancements in USB4 v2
The USB4 v2 standard incorporates several innovations aimed at improving signal integrity and link reliability. Pulse Amplitude Modulation with three levels (PAM3) is used to increase bandwidth efficiency. In addition, a Frequency Variation Profile enhances the stability of the link-training process, which governs initialization and signal optimization.

A new TS2.CLKSW training sequence further supports controlled clock switching during link setup, improving interoperability and reliability across devices.

Certified Anritsu test solution
Anritsu’s USB4 v2 test solution is built around the Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A. USB-IF hardware certification confirms that the platform meets the requirements for validating USB4 Version 2.0 implementations and can be used for both development and compliance testing.

The solution is intended to help manufacturers verify signal quality, performance margins, and interoperability, supporting more reliable USB4 v2 products and faster time to market.

Signal Quality Analyzer-R MP1900A capabilities
The MP1900A is a high-performance bit error rate tester (BERT) designed for receiver testing of multiple high-speed interfaces, including USB, PCIe, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, and 400 GbE/800 GbE.

It combines a high-quality pulse pattern generator with a sensitive error detector and supports a wide range of jitter sources, such as sinusoidal jitter, random jitter, spread-spectrum clocking, and burst jitter, as well as differential and common-mode noise injection.

For USB4 v2 applications, the system also supports link-training and Link Training and Status State Machine (LTSSM) analysis, enabling detailed evaluation of connection establishment and stability.

Market adoption and use cases
Initial demand for USB4 v2 evaluation and certification is largely driven by semiconductor manufacturers developing USB4 v2 controller ICs. As adoption increases, test houses and, later, consumer-product manufacturers producing USB4 v2 hubs, docking stations, and cables are expected to require certified test platforms.

USB-IF certification positions Anritsu’s solution as a validated tool for these emerging validation needs.

Industry relevance
By achieving USB-IF hardware certification for USB4 Version 2.0, Anritsu addresses the growing complexity of high-speed interface testing. As data rates rise and new modulation and training techniques are introduced, certified, high-precision test systems become essential for ensuring reliable next-generation connectivity.
